Drilling Fluids Testing
A five minute check on the abrasive fraction a mud is carrying.
Sand content is read with a 200 mesh screen, a funnel and a graduated glass tube. The mud is washed through the screen, what is retained is returned to the tube, and the volume settles out as a percentage read straight off the glass.
The number matters because that fraction is what wears pump liners, bit nozzles and mud motors. It is also one of the few tests that needs no power, no calibration and no training beyond a demonstration, which is why it belongs in every mud kit rather than only in a laboratory.
- What it measures
- Percentage sand by volume
- How it works
- Wet screening on a 200 mesh sieve, graduated glass measuring tube
- Where it is used
- Rig site mud checks and solids control
