Drilling Fluids Testing

The six speed rotational viscometer the API mud procedure is written around.

The sample sits between a rotating outer sleeve and a suspended bob, and the torque the fluid transmits to the bob is read off a dial. Six rotational speeds, 600, 300, 200, 100, 6 and 3 rpm, give the readings the procedure asks for, and plastic viscosity, yield point and gel strength come straight out of them.

It is the instrument a mud report is built on. The readings feed directly into the figures a drilling programme is controlled by, so the spring, the dial and the geometry have to stay inside tolerance, which is what calibration is for. We supply the viscometer, hold the spare bobs, sleeves and springs, and recalibrate the one already on the bench.

What it measures
Plastic viscosity, yield point and gel strength
How it works
Concentric cylinder, six speeds from 600 down to 3 rpm
Where it is used
Water based and oil based mud control, on the rig and in the laboratory
