A direct reading of gel strength from how far a thin cylinder sinks.
A shearometer is deliberately simple. A thin walled cylinder is set on the surface of an undisturbed mud and allowed to sink under a known load, and the depth it reaches is read off a scale as the shear strength of the gel in pounds per 100 square feet.
It gives the same quantity a viscometer reports as gel strength, with no motor, no spring and nothing to calibrate electrically, which is what keeps it in field kits and on rigs where a mains socket is not a given. The tubes and the scale are replaceable.
- What it measures
- Shear strength of a mud gel in pounds per 100 square feet
- How it works
- Thin walled cylinder sinking into an undisturbed sample, read on a scale
- Where it is used
- Field gel strength checks, suspension and settling assessment
