Mud and filtrate pH, measured rather than guessed off a strip.
Alkalinity sets how a mud behaves. Polymer stability, bentonite yield, corrosion rate and scaling all track pH. Strips are quick, but they are read by eye and they drift badly in a high salt sample, which is most of what a mud laboratory handles.
A digital meter with an electrode suited to high ionic strength gives a number that can be recorded and trended, with temperature compensation so a reading taken hot and one taken cold mean the same thing. Buffers, electrodes and storage solution are consumables and are held with the instruments.
- What it measures
- pH of mud and filtrate, with temperature compensation
- How it works
- Digital meter, glass electrode, buffer calibration
- Where it is used
- Alkalinity and corrosion control in polymer and bentonite systems
